Peterhead striker Isaac Layne is determined to fill the goal-scoring boots of Balmoor legend Rory McAllister especially as the Blue Toon play in a manner that excites him.
McAllister netted 193 goals in an eight-and-a-half-year spell that ended when he moved to Cove Rangers in January with Layne, a summer recruit from Dumbarton, out to prove he can grab goals and become a hero in the north-east.
The 25-year-old who has also played for Alloa, Brechin City and Stranraer said: “I am very happy to be at Peterhead. I wanted to come here as I have always found the brand of football that they play to be attractive.”
“I know that Peterhead had a very good striker in Rory McAllister for the past few years and I have big shoes to fill. I scored 9 times for Dumbarton last season in 16 starts and I would have scored more had it not been for an injury and then the shut-down.”
“Double figures seems a reasonable target especially as this team looks to attack.”
Jim McInally’s side head to Dundee tonight for a friendly just 3 days after a 3-0 win over Inverurie Locos Works during which Layne was involved in an animated discussion with team-mate Ben Armour over who would take the penalty that was awarded when the game was goalless.
Armour won the debate and scored however Layne shrugged off the missed opportunity as he explained: “Pre-season is not all about scoring. It is about getting yourself fit after not playing for over six months. Playing Dundee again will help us get ready for the real thing.”
Ben Armour is set to miss out against the Dark Blues after picking up an ankle injury at the weekend however Derek Lyle is ready to play for the first time in pre-season.
Simon Ferry is also available again for selection with manager Jim McInally also including a number of trialists with Jim saying: “We only played each other a couple of weeks ago but we will have a different line-up and Dundee have a couple of new signings including Charlie Adam that they can call on.”
