Selection challenge of a different kind

Peterhead manager Jim McInally is in the unfamiliar position of having a selection choice to make when Forfar Athletic visit Balmoor this afternoon.

Injuries have been a constant theme since the season started in October however Gary MacKenzie is available to face the Loons and Simon Ferry could make a quicker than expected return following a hamstring problem in last Saturday’s 1-0 success over Dumbarton.

Jason Brown is now suspension free to leave Jim saying: “Picking a team this season has been a challenge as we have had to fit a fair number of square pegs into round holes however for this game the challenge is who to start with.”

“Having Gary and Jason back means that there are six defenders looking for four places and that is the first time we have had that. It could be seven looking for a starting place if Simon proves his fitness and I opt to look at him for a defensive role.”

“That is the best numbers we have had this season especially if Simon is fit as they would add competition to midfield as well.”

Further up the pitch Josh Mulligan and Isaac Layne remain out with Jim saying: “We are still not at full strength however that is something that may not happen all season due to the long break everyone had and then a lot of games in quick succession.”

“Forfar have had their fair share of injuries as well but their manager Stuart Malcolm is just getting on with things as well.”

Whatever team Jim picks he knows that his side are in for a tough game as he explained: “Our games with Forfar were really tight last season and this one will be the same. They will not be happy where they are in the league and winning this one gets them up and running.”

“For us it is all about consistency. The players rose to the challenge against Dumbarton last week and ensured that we got a win despite difficult circumstances with players being injured and having a defence that was one of the smallest I have ever seen.”

“They showed last Saturday that they could do the dirty side of the game well and we will need a similar approach in this one as every ball is going to be fought for.”
