Peterhead manager Jim McInally was disappointed that the Blue Toon failed to ‘spark’ as they exited the Scottish Cup on Tuesday night.
Stenhousemuir won 1-0 at Balmoor thanks to a goal from Mark McGuigan on 18 minutes and whilst Peterhead created several chances they were never quite able to get on top of the Warriors.
McInally said: “It is disappointing to lose and disappointing to miss out on a game against Kilmarnock in the next round however I cannot criticise the effort of the players in trying to get us through.”
“They gave us everything they had but we never really got a hand of steam up in their half. We lost a bad goal as they should not have been able to get down the wing and Joshua Rae will have been disappointed not to hold onto their first shot. The ball spilled straight out to Mark McGuigan and that was that.”
“Joshua has made few mistakes this season and there was enough time to make up for it but it never happened. Their goalkeeper made three good saves and our goalkeeper spilled one shot and that was the difference.”
Jim added: “Jason Brown picked up a slight knock at the weekend and could not play and we also had to make a change early when Scott Brown came off. He felt his hamstring tighten during the warm up however he thought he would be okay. Any team in this league would miss him.”
“We had to put Ben Armour on earlier than we wanted to but thankfully he came through it okay. I thought Andrew McCarthy was excellent and Derryn Kesson showed some good touches in his first start with Kieran McGrath giving us a bit of life up front when he came on.”
“We will now look to bounce back against Dumbarton on Saturday.”
