Peterhead’s match-winner against Queen’s Park on Saturday, striker Russell McLean, was in line for a very different role in the game against the Spiders had Andy McDonald not come through a late injury check.
Defender McDonald had been a major doubt after being injured at training on Tuesday and Balmoor manager Jim McInally had drawn up a team that would have seen McLean start the game in the centre of the Blue Toon defence.
Jim explained: “We did not know if Andy was going to make it until Saturday morning. After discussions with all the coaching staff on Friday we had agreed to go with Russell in defence as opposed to having waiting on the bench to come on and turn the game.”
“Russell is very much a striker however he has played at the back for us before during his first spell when he had to go there in a Play-off Final against Stenhousemuir. With the injuries we had last week we thought we would have had to ask Russell to play there again.”
“I am sure that he would have done a good job for us there but to come off the bench and win a penalty and then score the winner was still a decent day’s work for Russell.”
