Alloa Athletic preview

Oct 22, 2022

The Peterhead players selected for action against visitors Alloa this afternoon will be asked to show that they can take responsibility for the ball, cut out the defensive mistakes that have been costing goals and also manage having light at the end of the tunnel for injured team-mates.

The last time the sides met the Wasps won handsomely and Balmoor assistant manager David Nicholls wants the Blue Toon to show that they have learned from that meeting as he explained: “That was a poor afternoon for us. Alloa have good players who can hurt you and we allowed them to do that as we gave away possession far too easily. We did not show a lot of responsibility when we had the ball and too many passes were misplaced and we invited pressure onto ourselves.”

“Whoever gets a jersey today will know what is expected of them when we have possession. They will be expected to take care of it. We simply cannot give it away cheaply.”

Nicholls added: “We also have to stop losing the soft goals we have been losing. The players go onto the park knowing their responsibilities when it comes to defending however, we have been losing far too many goals at corners.”

“Both the manager and I have gone over who should be doing what. Mistakes can happen but they should not be happening at the rate that they have been happening.”

“We are getting to a stage where we have competition for places as within the next few weeks we will have Andy McCarthy, Andy McDonald and Russell McLean all available. We have not had that strength in depth all season and that strength will put players under a bit of pressure to keep a starting jersey.”

“The game against Alloa is an opportunity to show that you welcome the responsibility of keeping the ball, you can mark correctly at set-pieces and also handle the pressure of what they have been asked to do.”

Team News –

Enock Walusimbi is in line to make his home debut however Ryan Strachan, Andrew McDonald, Robbie McGale, Russell McLean, Hamish Ritchie and Ola Adeyemo have all been ruled out.

Paul Dixon and Max Gillies are doubts and whilst the long term injured Andrew McCarthy has returned to training, he will not be risked in this one.
