Peterhead were on the front foot early as a Jack McIver ball found Jordon Brown who linked up with his brother Jason who had a shot go wide.
The hosts remained on the front foot and after six minutes, Kieran Shanks chased down a ball after some good play by Jack Brown. Jay Hogarth tried to force the ball forward before the on-loan Arbroath striker intercepted but it came to nothing but it highlighted the fine start from the Blue Toon.
Peterhead still threatened as the game progressed but Alloa grew into the game a little bit more, they were never going to have an easy day at Balmoor with the hosts having a level of organisation which is contary to what was posted on social media from our opponents, Daniel Fosu tried to find Shanks as the Blue Toon went in search of an opener but Scott Taggart intercepted any danger.
Jason Brown was a colossal figure defensively for the hosts and had a second bite at the cherry on 34 minutes, a Jack Maciver corner found Jack Wilkie who sent a knock-on in the direction of Jason Brown who shot wide.
Alloa were on top in the final five minutes of the first half, Luke Donnelly attempted to open the scoring for Brian Rice’s side with the former Arbroath forward hitting a composed effort towards goal but a superb block by Jack Wilkie made sure it was level at the interval. Already you could sense an understanding between each other which was a stark contrast to previous weeks.
Ross McIver had a header go wide for Alloa as the visitors went in search of an opener and they upped their game in the second half with a little bit of adaptation formation wise also.
Alloa took the lead on 55 minutes with a ball from the right going all the way to the back post finding Luke Donnelly who guided home a header into the far bottom right corner past Stuart McKenzie.
Peterhead weren’t out of this and didn’t start crumbling following the goal, they almost levelled in unknown fashion as a Jack MacIver free kick was almost headed into his own net by George Stanger.
The visitors doubled the advantage on 73 minutes as a cross came in by Murray Miller which came off the hand of Jordon Brown that saw referee Mike Roncone point to the spot. Up stepped Scott Taggart who dispatched a well taken penalty past Stuart McKenzie to seal the game.
It goes without saying that it was a better showing from Peterhead as they travel to Queen Of The South next weekend.
Ryan Strachan said post-match, “Can’t commend the guys enough, their application and effort from Tuesday until today, in the first 45 minutes, we were visibly the better team and had two good opportunities to score, we can take massive positives from the game.
“Deep down, we wanted a reaction but we also wanted to look better on the eye, in theory we’ve got what we wanted but the bottom line is it’s another defeat.”
