Peterhead 1-2 Airdrie
A second half penalty was decisive as Peterhead were beaten by Airdrie in a tight contest at Balmoor.
The Blue Toon were unfortunate to come away with nothing after matching their full-time opponents in a game, which could have gone either way.
Airdrie did start best and were rewarded when Kurtis Roberts crossed for Callum Gallagher to steer in a back post volley in the fourth minute.
But from there, the Blue Toon were the team asking the questions and Scott Brown saw a low shot strike the post.
There was then a gilt-edged chance for Aidan Smith, who skewed wide from a Rory McAllister pass following a swift counter-attack.
Peterhead deservedly drew level in the 26th minute from a set-piece. Ryan Conroy’s free-kick was not cleared by the visitors and David Ferguson volleyed in from six yards.
The Blue Toon continued to probe in the second half, with Brown forcing David Hutton into a smart stop with a curling effort, which was destined for the bottom corner.
Airdrie, however, were awarded a spot-kick in the 75th minute when Gallagher went down under a challenge from Jamie Stevenson.
Up stepped Dale Carrick, five minutes after coming on as a substitute, and he made no mistake.
Peterhead’s one big chance to equalise for a second time fell to McAllister in the closing stages.
Gary Fraser’s drive deflected into substitute Derek Lyle’s path and he cushioned the ball for McAllister but with Hutton off his line, the Blue Toon skipper was unable to keep his effort down.
